‘Supplementary Ruins’ at Eastcheap Space

‘Eastcheap Space is excited to announce our current artist in residence show: ‘Supplementary Ruins.’

Molisso has been exploring the neolithic histories and non-histories of Letchworth Garden City, from barrows to ancient roadways; fact, to spirituality and myth.

The Ickleford Tumulus south of Letchworth Rail Station and the is one of many barrows and henges that can be found trickled across southern England, most notably near the ancient road that makes the Icknield way. Its history is questioned by modern scholars, who believe the myth of this early track was fabricated by medieval chroniclers.

Molisso has been fascinated by invented histories, ruins, ancient grounds, and how these situate our sense of self in time. For Molisso, ruins can help still the anxiety created by the clashing temporal modes in which we find ourselves: the fast tempo of our own mortality, the span of human culture, and the creeping geographic time. Ruins are the evidence that we can survive our own destruction.

Modern cities, however, can be debilitating in their need to abruptly pull down, rebuild, and grow and grow over the ruins of the cities beneath them.

Molisso invents her own historical alternative, where ritualistic ruins are created to harmonize with this ever-changing cityscape (much like how barrows and burial mounds reflected the unalterable landscape of prehistoric Britain). These megaliths are inspired by the temporary monuments you can find scattered across cities: fly-tipping, debris, bedding, and plastic in all its vibrance.

‘Supplementary Ruins’ is a playful experiment into what ritualistic ruins could look like today.”
